Why Is Pet Grooming Important?

Do you enjoy the benefits of being clean and healthy?  Most humans like the results of having clean hair and skin and healthy teeth.  Our pets are no different, except they depend on their person to do the detail work for them.  Yes, our pets do have a natural tendency to groom their fur or remove debris from in between their toes.  However, they can’t bathe themselves, or brush their teeth, or clean their ears thoroughly.  Why is pet grooming important?  Read on to see how grooming your pet regularly is key to their health and well being.

Just as humans respond to touch, animals respond to the same.  Any pet, whether a young one or older one, responds to touch.  With a puppy or kitten, it is especially important to use grooming sessions as a time to bond with your pet and to gain their trust.  An older pet may require touch to soothe aches and pains as they get up in years, so if they are used to being groomed, they’ll more likely respond positively to touch for other health reasons.

Your pet’s skin and hair stays healthy when it’s brushed regularly.  The natural oils in their hair and skin are distributed evenly over the body when brushed on a regular basis.  A shorthaired pet may only require brushing once a week.  However, longhaired pets require daily brushing in order to keep their long locks in good condition.  Cats and rabbits tend to develop hairballs that lodge in their digestive systems if they’re not brushed regularly.  Pet grooming is important because it helps to prevent other possible health problems.

Bathing your pet is important to their overall health.  It can be a fun experience for both of you if it’s done regularly.  Bathing your pet not only gets your pet clean and helps to keep them healthy; it gives you an opportunity to inspect them for any unusual growths or possible problems.  If you know your pet well, you’ll be able to spot anything that might indicate a health issue and be able to address it immediately.  Be sure to use a shampoo that is formulated just for your dog, cat, or rabbit.  Rinse them thoroughly so they won’t itch!  Towel them dry and then allow the hair to dry naturally.  Follow up with a good brushing.

Fresh breath is nice, isn’t it?  We can enjoy fresh breath in our pets too if we care properly for their teeth and gums.  That’s not even the most vital reason to keep your pets’ teeth and gums clean and free of disease.  Did you know that periodontal disease has been linked in pets to heart and kidney difficulties?  It’s vital to learn how to care for your dog or cat’s teeth in order to avoid possible internal medical conditions.

Healthy paws make for a happy pet.  Your pet’s grooming regimen should include regular nail trimming.  Tools for trimming nails vary between cats, dogs, and rabbits, so be sure to use the correct one for your pet.  Your pet can experience difficulties with her paws if not cared for properly.  If you are at all uncomfortable trimming your pets’ nails, be sure to schedule it with a pet grooming professional.

There are several reasons why pet grooming is important.  If you love your pet, you want them to be healthy, right?  Grooming them is crucial to a good quality of life and health.
